New Jersey is bracing for another delay as the US postal service is scrambling to deliver packages, as the federal government is on a two-day national holiday.
The Postal Service is offering free overnight shipping for most packages that are no longer due for delivery, but the deadline to deliver mail was extended to Saturday, and the deadline for missing packages has been extended to Tuesday.
The deadline to ship an item from an address is 7 p.m.
ET, Monday through Friday, unless otherwise posted.
The postal service will offer overnight delivery of packages from New Jersey, New York, New Jersey City, New Haven, Hartford, Hartford State, Bridgeport, East Hartford, Manchester, Monmouth, Plainfield, Springfield, Westfield and Hartford State University, with no overnight delivery charges for non-U.S. addresses.
Postal employees will also be required to mail packages from addresses that have been reported lost or damaged, including New Jersey.
The post office is also offering free, non-refundable shipping for items that are in the post office’s inventory, but that have not yet been delivered.
Customers will be able to ship packages from any address to any address within the United States, and it is not required to pay any additional shipping charges.
The USPS said that if an item is lost, damaged or lost of any size or type, it must be reported to the Postal Inspector General for further investigation.
The agency said the two-hour extension will also allow time for the USPS to determine whether to offer delivery to people who are unable to find the missing item, which is not a requirement under the holiday.
A number of state and local postal unions have expressed concern that the extended deadline will result in delays in delivery and could put postal workers at risk.
The National Association of Letter Carriers has called on the USPS not to delay deliveries because of the holiday and is urging the postal service to extend the deadline.
The National Retail Federation said in a statement that postal workers should be able access services on Sunday for those who may not be able for the same time period, including family members.
