Expedia has started shipping away packages containing more than 50 percent of its Amazon lost package inventory, an expansion that could threaten its ability to keep customers from cancelling their travel plans.
Expedia will begin shipping packages weighing up to 50 percent more than what it normally sells for the holidays in the coming weeks, and it will begin packaging those packages with customized packaging boxes that offer a little extra protection, company spokeswoman Julie Loeffler said.
Expedia and Amazon are partnering to sell packages with personalized packaging boxes.
Expansion into gift cards and other loyalty programs that Amazon started selling last year will also be expanded to the new holiday package format, she said.
Amazon has said that its goal is to increase its return rate to 90 percent, and that it expects to double its revenue by the end of the year.
Expanded sales of gift cards, travel and other products from Amazon have helped the company recover from its 2009 losses and increase revenue by nearly $1 billion last year.
