The NBA and the NHL have been forced to adjust their television contracts in the face of the recent spike in player injuries.
The NBA’s new TV deal with CBS expires after the 2017-18 season, and the new deal for NHL TV is set to expire in 2020.
But with the NHL on the verge of its fifth straight season without a playoff berth, there is talk of extending the TV contracts for another two years, and it’s been suggested that the NBA could be able to make similar deals with other sports leagues.
The NFL and the NFLPA have not commented on the potential extension.
However, the new NFL TV deal was announced on Tuesday, and ESPN has reported that the league has been working with CBS to extend the contract for another year.
A source told TheScore Esports that the deal is expected to be worth $1 billion per year.
The NFL is also reportedly negotiating with a TV network to be the exclusive home of the new CBS television contract, with the network reportedly asking for a one-year extension, with CBS agreeing to pay $2 billion per season, with ESPN reportedly asking $2.4 billion per.CBS and the NBA are expected to announce a second round of television deals later this month.
